When people think about career guidance in schools, the conversation almost always begins in Grade 9.
Should I choose Physical Sciences or Business Studies?
Should I take Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy?
What career will these subjects allow me to pursue?
These are important questions, and they deserve thoughtful, evidence-based guidance. At Professional Purpose Consulting, supporting learners through subject choices will always remain an important part of what we do.
But over the past few years, one question has continued to challenge my thinking:
What if we’ve been starting the conversation too late?
Looking Beyond Grade 9
Every year, thousands of South African learners make the transition from primary school to high school.
For many, it is an exciting milestone. For others, it is overwhelming.
New teachers. New expectations. New friendships. Greater independence. More responsibility. A new environment where they begin discovering who they are and who they want to become.
By the time learners reach Grade 9, they are expected to make subject choices that may influence future study and career opportunities. Yet very few have been given the opportunity to first develop the self-awareness, confidence, and decision-making skills that make those choices meaningful.
Career guidance is not only about choosing a career. It is about understanding yourself. And perhaps that journey should begin earlier.
A Different Way of Thinking
At Professional Purpose Consulting, we believe that helping people make better people decisions begins long before those decisions become high stakes.
That belief has inspired us to begin developing a new initiative called Bridge to High School.
It is not simply a workbook. Nor is it another career guidance programme.
It is a Grade 7 Transition & Career Readiness Programme designed to help learners build the foundations they will need as they enter high school and, eventually, begin making decisions about their futures.
Through guided activities, reflection and practical exercises, the programme encourages learners to explore who they are, develop confidence, strengthen study habits and begin thinking about their aspirations — not by asking them to decide on a career at the age of twelve or thirteen, but by helping them understand themselves first.
Because informed career decisions begin with self-awareness.
Why This Matters in South Africa
South Africa faces a unique challenge.
Too many young people enter higher education or the workplace uncertain about their strengths, unaware of the opportunities available to them, or following pathways chosen by others.
We often focus on the decisions learners make in Grade 9 or Grade 12, yet we spend far less time preparing them for those decisions.
What if we changed that? What if every learner entered high school with greater confidence, stronger study habits, a clearer understanding of themselves, and a sense of possibility about the future?
We may not solve every challenge facing education overnight. But we can begin laying stronger foundations.
The Journey Begins
Bridge to High School is still under development.
Over the coming months, Professional Purpose Consulting will continue refining the programme, engaging with educators and preparing for a pilot implementation in selected schools.
This is only the beginning.
We’ll be sharing the journey as it unfolds — the lessons we learn, the conversations we have with schools, the feedback we receive from learners and teachers, and the insights that shape the programme along the way.
We believe that meaningful change is rarely created in isolation. It grows through collaboration, reflection, and a willingness to keep learning.
If Bridge to High School ultimately helps even one learner approach high school with greater confidence and a stronger sense of purpose, then the journey will already have been worthwhile.
And if, over time, it helps thousands of young people build stronger foundations for the future, then we’ll know we started the conversation at exactly the right time.
